My oeuvre mostly touches on race relations within a post colonial framework in the context of art history. I am more interested in the colonial contact between Africa and the West particularly on how blacks have been portrayed throughout Western art history. We have an idea of colonialism and how blacks were treated within that history. Early works comment on the exclusion of black artists within the Western context of art making. Current works comment on how images of blacks normally carry negative connotations which is synonymous to how Western art framed black people. Therefore my work is a
critical exploration of how the black figure is viewed in our modern time and
an attempt to subvert or expose the idea of how the black figure is portrayed
using history as a signifier. I am inspired by Baroque art as it depicts large quantity of blacks portrayed in subordinate roles. I am aware of history’s implications towards the black figure and how it has been presented, however my work is a subversion of how Western art history portrayed black people. Therefore I appropriate paintings of Baroque artists and portray the black figure as a protagonist.
